After his travels through Europe, Sluiter at his return to Holland acquired a piece of land in Katwijk. The house he had built was inhabited by the Sluiter family from 1901 onward. Despite the many views he made of the beach at Scheveningen, the present work likely depicts the beach at Katwijk. As a respected Katwijk artist a street was named after him: situated just beyond the Josef Israëlsweg, behind the B.J. Blommers street.
