Nakken, who came from The Hague, concentrated on the painting of horses. Well-trained at the The Hague Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, he roamed Europe after his studies together with the son of the other well-known painter of horses Verschuur (lot 24), and at his return was struck by the old farmsteads in Limburg. Many of his later paintings depict these farmsteads and their courtyards. The horses in these paintings play a leading role, while the figures only play a secondary role.
