Kelder never tied himself to a particular style or movement as an artist, but his early work, characterised by a robust realistic painting style and dark tones, evokes the spirit of the Bergense School. Later, his painting style shifted towards a lighter, more delicate approach.
He produced numerous portraits, including those of Jan Toorop, a friend of Kelder’s, as well as prominent figures such as poet Martinus Nijhoff and art collector Piet Boendermaker, who acquired the present painting for his collection.
