Attributed to Isaac Israels
(Amsterdam 1865 – The Hague 1934)
Portrait of a lady wearing a white Hirsch-gown (circa 1883)
Oil on canvas, 81.1 x 65.4 cm
Provenance:
Private collection, Germany (since the nineteen sixties)
N.B.:
The depicted young woman is likely Fannij Enthoven (1853-1940), the sister of Nanette Enthoven (1852-1883) who was already portrayed by Israels in 1881 in a similar gown and posture. The refined rendition of the gown shows Israels was very skilled at rendering fabrics and fashion from early on.
