Otto Eerelman received numerous commissions, in The Netherlands and abroad, to record memorable moments and loved ones. He excelled in the painting of dogs and depicted these in a naturalistic, but romantic style. The work offered here is a portrait of his own dog, his loved Smous. This painting was given by the artist to a member of the family in 1913.
