Note:
Marlene Dumas is a South African artist living in Amsterdam, where she became one of Holland’s most prolific artists. Dumas creates figurative works inspired by personal memories and a diverse array of printed matter, including Polaroid photographs, newspaper and magazine cuttings, letters and Flemish Old Master paintings.
This “character”, as Dumas calls it, was made as part of the series ‘The human form’. The work is called Leeftijd onbepaald (Age indefinite), but there is more that remains indefinite. Is this a man or a woman? A boy or an older lady? A sportsman or a patient? It all remains uncertain.
