Maja van Hall is one of the more high-profile female sculptors of the 20th century, with predecessors such as Charlotte Van Pallandt, Lotti van der Gaag, Pearl Pearlmutter and Ferdi Tajiri. With Het Sloofje (1967) and Filosloof (2003) she gave women’s emancipation a face. In 2003 she participated in the international exhibition Den Haag Sculptuur with a life-size version of the sculpture offered here in ultramarine blue plaster, an identical sculpture executed in polyester was acquired by the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem.
