Appel’s artistic exploration expanded beyond painting to include sculpture and ceramics, displaying the same exuberance and dynamism as his paintings. Artists such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, whom Appel greatly admired, had already paved the way. In 1948, Appel and his contemporaries including Corneille and Constant Nieuwenhuijs first experimented with the medium at the Russel-Tiglia earthenware factory in Limburg. Later, Appel worked together with De Porceleyne Fles factory in Delft, where this ceramic tile was created. The collaboration with De Porceleyne Fles ended in 1968, as Appel had his ceramics manufactured at the Struktuur 68 studio in The Hague from then on.
