Note:
Johannes Franciscus Spohler was a well-known cityscape painter of the Romantic School, who mainly worked in Amsterdam to depict the streets, canals, and surrounding activities on a busy day. His typically Dutch works are populated with all kinds of figures – from working class to the elite – represented in great detail. This lot is an excellent example of Spohler’s qualities to depict not only architecture, but also the figures into a Romantic ideal.
