Johannes Duntze was an important landscape painter in his time. He made name and fame with his winter landscapes and ice scenes. This artist, among many, was trained by Alexandre Calame. Duntze did not only work in Munich, Berlin and Düsseldorf, but also in Geneva, Paris, Antwerp and the Netherlands. The atmosphere evoked by this landscape is reminiscent of the winter landscapes of contemporary Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, who lived and worked in Kleve (Germany) from 1834 until his death.
