The German-Czech artist became known in the early eighties as one of the ‘Neue Wilde’, a neo-expressionistic art movement in Germany. After the conceptual nineteen sixties and seventies Dokoupil was looking for a contemporary means of expression. This search resulted in the fabrication of works without the use of paint brushes, but instead applying new techniques. He is known to have made use of candle soot, imprints of car tyres and spray paint. For the work offered here Dokoupil treated the paper with a soldering iron.
