Note:
Johannes Zoetelief (Jan) Tromp, a Dutch painter, is celebrated for his heartfelt depictions of enchanting scenes featuring children in the countryside, often accompanied by a playful goat – much like the captivating painting we have featured in our auction. His unique artistic style reflects a profound connection with both the Larense School and the Haagse School.
Upon his marriage, Zoetelief Tromp commissioned the construction of a residence in Blaricum. Architect Willem Cornelis Bauer designed the residence, and it was named Villa Thea.
He is renowned for his joyful and sunlit scenes. His authentic love for the innocence of childhood endeared him to art buyers. Unfortunately, the economic challenges of the Great Depression prompted a significant life change and made him settle in Breteuil, a village in France, where his son had ventured into chicken farming. The serene surroundings of Breteuil became his new artistic backdrop, reflecting the tranquillity and simplicity that characterized his beloved genre scenes.
