Jan Willem van Borselen was a pupil of his father Pieter van Borselen (1802-1873) and the Hague landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870). His most sought-after landscapes are the polder landscapes with water, reeds and pollard willows, which he painted in the area around The Hague.
