Weissenbruch studied at the Haagse academie under one of the foremost landscape painters of the period, Andreas Schelfhout. Weissenbruch established himself as one of the leading figures of the Hague School. Although he mainly painted landscapes, he also produced several still lifes, farm interiors and cityscapes. In his watercolours and paintings of the flat polder landscape he was able to render the typical Dutch atmosphere as no other.
