Van Kouwenhoven is regarded as the foremost painter of romantic landscapes from Rotterdam. The influence of his teacher Balthasar Paul Ommeganck (the famous Antwerp landscape- and animal painter) is quite clear. In 1817 Van Kouwenhoven made a trip through Germany and Switzerland, where he produced many sketches after nature, which he subsequently used for his paintings.
