In 1904 Israels left for Paris, where he kept a studio for over twenty years. As a result of the First World War in 1914 Israels was obliged to work ‘indoors’, which made him decide to alternate his stay in Paris with a number of visits to neutral Switzerland. In around 1915 Israels was active in Bern, where he painted several brilliant cityscapes ‘en plein air’.
