As the son of a painter the Haarlem artist Hendrik Reekers already made a name for himself at a young age with his flower still lifes and detailed drawings of flora and fauna. Although Reekers was mainly active in Haarlem, he often travelled to Brussels, Paris and Versailles on invitation. Work by the artist can be seen in The Netherlands in the collections of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam and Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
