Note:
Hendrik Jan Wolter specialised in painting impressionistic and true-to-life cityscapes. He received his training in Antwerp and resided for a long time in the Gooi region, where he was part of the artist circle around Hotel Hamdorff in Laren, alongside Jan Sluijters, Co Breman, and Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig. Wolter’s keen observation extended beyond cities; he frequently depicted the lively maritime activity along the Thames, skilfully capturing its nuances of light and atmosphere with a misty, greyish colour palette. Charmingly, the present painting was given to Lies Vermey, his neighbour from across the Torenlaan in Laren. The work remained in the collection of the family for many decades.
