Designed in 1919, the first example of this sideboard was exhibited in 1920 and soon after acquired by the well-known architect Piet Elling (1897-1962). After the disappearance of the Elling sideboard no other examples of pre-war versions of this design were in existance. Starting in the late nineteen-fifties a number of sideboards, including the present example, were made on request by by Rietvelds’ dedicated furniture maker Gerard A. van de Groenekan (1904-1994). Other examples are in the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the Kirkland Museum, Denver.
