Opdenhoff was the only one of Andreas Schelfhout’s pupils who exclusively painted marines. This might have been the result of the teachings of J.C. Schotel, from whom Opdenhoff learned to distinguish the different types of ships and their rigging as well as painting troubled waters. He mainly learned from Schelfhout the balanced distribution of his motifs over the image plane and a composition along diagonals. Though, for this work Opdenhoff was most likely inspired by the master marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915). Stylistic correspondences with Panorama Mesdag are clearly present.
