Note:
On Beeklaan in Loosduinen, The Hague, near Dekkersduin and the Loosduinsevaart, several painters settled in the 1880s, including Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa, Charles Dankmeijer, Edzard Koning, and later, Willem de Zwart. In the spring of 1883, Breitner also moved here before permanently leaving for Amsterdam in 1886. The painters’ colony later became known as the ‘Loosduinse School.’ Breitner left behind a number of important works in his studio on Beeklaan, including the present lot on offer, which bears the following annotation: “Studie op het vorig atelier van Breitner (Beeklaan Loosduinen) gevonden” (Study found at Breitner’s previous studio on Beeklaan Loosduinen).
