Woodcut, 121.5 x 80.5 cm
Note:
Fang’s prints, which are of monumental size, breathe new life into the ancient Asian tradition of woodblock printing. This intricate and meticulous process involves carving a ‘negative’ image onto a panel, applying ink to the surface, and transferring the image onto paper. Each colour and tone necessitate a separate plate and specific printing order. Given their grand scale, Fang’s images are composed on multiple interconnected scrolls. The elongated strips not only evoke an emotive fragmentation of the image but also serve as a metaphor for memory and historical testimony.
