In 1897 Evert Pieters bought a house with a studio in Blaricum, a popular village for many painters. Jozef Israëls, Anton Mauve and Max Liebermann also spent some time here to paint ‘en plein air’ on the heaths. It is possible that Pieters – as well as Henri Koetser and Jan Veth – became inspired during this period by Jozef Isräels, who made multiple works on the same theme. A comparable work is part of the collection of Kunstmuseum Den Haag (inv. no. 0331824).
