A Thanka with the deity Kalachakra
Tibet, 15th century
Kalachakra symbolises the ‘wheel of time’, he has a blue body, 4 heads, 24 arms and 2 legs. His main/central head is blue, on the right red and the two on the left side are white and yellow, every head has three eyes. He has blue, red and white arms. In his two main blue arms he holds his consort Vishvamata, while holding a Ghanta (bell) and a Dorje in his hands on her back.
On the reverse the 10 syllables of the Kalachakra Mantra (prayer) depicted on a lotus base with a mandorla.
