Note:
Van der Elsken became famous as a photographer but also made films, often during a photography assignment. For magazines like Avenue and De Katholieke Illustratie, he travelled all over the world, resulting in thousands of photographs. Unlike many fellow photographers, Van der Elsken did not fade into the background. He actively engaged with the people in front of his camera and presented himself, accompanied by colourful, self-spoken commentary. In his exploration, lovers, children, acquaintances, artists, and people from the streets, from Paris to Tokyo, from Edam to Calcutta, were compellingly and charmingly drawn along.
This photo was also made for Avenue magazine and depicts the renowned artist Jeroen Henneman (1942) in blue coat, among others.
