The elephant god Ganesha
North India, 11th/12th century
Ganesha stands depicted on his riding animal the shrew mouse, the whole carved in red sandstone. Striking is the Kirtimukha depicted here as a monster’s head above Ganesha. To the left and right of the Kirtimukha two standing orans and two Ganas, dwarfs with animal heads. Depicted is the six-armed Ganesha holding his various attributes.
