Castle Ilpenstein was situated north of Amsterdam and was built in 1622 by Volckert Overlander, mayor and alderman of the city of Amsterdam. By descent the castle came into the possession of the Amsterdam patrician family De Graeff. Pieter de Graeff, Lord of Purmerland and Ilpendam and Lord of castle Ilpenstein, was administrator of the Dutch East India Company and lived in the castle which housed his art collection.
