14. Claes Jansz. van Willigen

Claes Jansz. van Willigen
(1630-1676)
Landscape near the River Rhine
Signed lower left and lower centre
Oil on panel, 91.1 x 154.5 cm
Note:
Little is known of Claes Jansz. van Willigen, who probably lived in Rotterdam his entire life. He appears to have produced a small corpus of landscape paintings, especially German Rhine-landscapes such as the present work, which is one of the few signed examples.

The Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam has a similar work by Claes Jansz. Van Willigen, dated 1665, in their collection (acc.no. 1983 OK). Just as the present lot, this painting depicts the Rhine landscape with boats, passers-by, village scenes, and in the background, a mountainous landscape.
