Albertus Verhoesen
(Utrecht 1806 – 1881)
Chickens pecking grit
Signed and dated 1849 l.l.
Oil on canvas, 61.7 x 79.5 cm
Provenance:
Private collection, the Netherlands
N.B.:
Chickens feed on seeds, cereal, worms and insects, but also have a need for extra minerals. When lacking calcium the chicken is unable to form a viable eggshell. As a prevention chickens were given mussel- or oyster shells as a food additive. Nowadays this grit consists of ground stone and shells.
