The Rolex Yacht-Master history begins in 1992, where the first Yacht-Master was introduced. Designed for the nautical sportsman, the Yacht-Master reflected the Rolex Submariner but was truly a different breed. It would take another 15 years for Rolex to introduce a long-awaited successor. The successor was, indeed, designed specifically with the professional sailor in mind. To provide synchronisation at the starting sequence of a yacht race, this so-called ‘Regatta’ chronograph features the first ever programmable countdown with a mechanical memory. The Yacht-Master’s countdown mechanism is constructed using a column wheel that extends through the main plate and a vertical clutch. The mechanism makes it possible for the wearer to program in advance of the official countdown time and then start the timer once the countdown has begun, and the mechanism can be programmed to count down 0 to 10 minutes.
