Keith Haring (on Kodak Suitcase) (1991)
Signed and dated 7.1.91 on the front
Felt pen drawing on Kodak suitcase, H. 37 x W. 45 x D. 12 cm
Provenance:
– Klaus Staeck, Heidelberg (publisher of A.R. Penck)
– Corporate collection, the Netherlands
Note:
A.R. Penck’s visual language, developed in the early 1960s, is seminal to Keith Haring (1958-1990), who explored the art of his German colleague exhibited early in the 1980s in New York. Penck created this portrait of his artist collegue, as a final tribute to Haring, who had passed away at a young age the year before. The candles in the drawing refer to Haring’s death.
