The paintings by Zhang Jianjun do not provide a commentary on consumption, but point to the relevance of the events after the meal, the messy scene following dinner when one lingers after the meal: a universal phenomenon. The number of empty plates, bottles and chairs create the melody of the evening for the artist. While admiring the large scale works one can overhear the chatter, tinkling glasses and laughing people. Although the depicted objects exemplify various social classes, they exhibit the basis of life, the foundation of human nature: being together.
