On the reverse of the panel, a red wax seal with a noble family crest belonging to a 19th century collector.
Verveer was a successful painter from The Hague and was one of the prominent artists of Dutch Romanticism. He was regularly awarded prizes and tributes and took part in numerous international art exhibitions. Initially Verveer mainly painted harbor views and river landscapes, but later on also started painting cityscapes, village views and fishing scenes.
