Note:
Dutch painter Otto Eerelman is famous for his detailed and lifelike portrayals of animals, particularly dogs and horses. He studied at the Academie Minerva in Groningen and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, and he also took private lessons with sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. He became a respected court painter, creating numerous portraits for the Dutch royal family, including Queen Wilhelmina. Eerelman's meticulous attention to detail and his ability to depict the animation of his subjects earned him widespread acclaim during his lifetime and beyond. Eerelman's works often featured Saint Bernard dogs and puppies. Many of the wealthier dog owners brought their pets to Eerelman's house in The Hague, where they stayed while being depicted. To accommodate them, he built a small kennel in his garden. Eerelman painted various dog breeds but had a particular preference for Saint Bernards, showcasing his wonderful skill in capturing their expressions and furry textures.
