44. Marlene Dumas

Marlene Dumas
(Capetown 1953)
Purple Pose
Signed and dated 1999 lr, titled and numbered 42/50 ll
Color lithograph, 122.3 x 68.2 cm
NB:
During the nineties of the last century Marlene Dumas produced a series of works which depict the joy and exploration of the pleasures of humankind. The subject matter consists of bodies, primarily women, who lustfully expose their genitals to the public, causing them to appear almost pornographic. While they, formally seen, sublimely represent the prejudices on class and gender.
Due to the cursory contours and lack of strong lines, it is difficult to attribute any personal characteristics to these women, which cause a break in the comfort of the viewers and have the effect of placing them in a paradoxically gray area.
