“Girl at still life”
Signed lr
Signed, titled and dated ’65 on the reverse
Oil on panel in original frame, 79.2 x 99.2 cm
NB:
The best known works by Wiggers are unadorned, at face value naïvely painted portraits of women and girls. The apparent stylistic technical simplicity is however too refined to be characterized as naive. The figures in his works always seem to be looking at the viewers frontally. However clear the glance of his models, the secret of his simplicity cannot be easily unraveled. In the work offered here Wiggers has depicted adolescence, the transition from girl to woman. The artist produced several paintings in this composition, in which the woman has a different age in each work.
