The City Gate, Possibly Delft
Signed lower right
Oil on canvas, 33.7 x 69.6 cm
Provenance:
Private collection, the Netherlands
Note:
Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg began as a painter of landscapes and historical subjects. However, from his mid-twenties onwards, he turned to painting cityscapes and town-scenes. This change of subject absolutely paid off; he developed a unique style and became a leading artist in this genre.
Cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Alkmaar and Delft have all been immortalized by Klinkenberg many times over. His works therefore offer a beautiful representation of Dutch cities in the 1900s before the industrial revolution and urbanization.
Contemporary admired his use of sunlight; the way he could make a facade of sandstones or red bricks glisten, as can also be seen in this painting.
