Capriccio of Utrecht (circa 1830)
Signed ll
Ink and watercolor on paper, 50.9 x 71.4 cm
Provenance:
– Jan Juffermans Fine Art, Utrecht
– Private collection, The Netherlands
NB:
Depicted is the Oudegracht canal in Utrecht, near the Lichte and the Donkere Gaard. Both sides of the canal are depicted with charming wharfside activity, so typical of the center of Utrecht.
Centrally depicted is the premises now housing the café De Postillon. On the center of the bridge a group of singers and a choirmaster with an ensign can be seen.
Typical for the work of Verheijen is the addition of fantasy elements to such cityscapes, in this work the church and steeple: a completely different building from the cathedral situated there.
