The background shows the former Prinsenkerk, which was demolished in the early twentieth century to make room for the new municipal library. The church owed its name to the adjacent Prinsenhof which, surrounded by the Gedempte Botersloot and the Nieuwe Markt, was one of the most visited areas of Rotterdam.
