The Belgian painter Simon Denis studied in his native city of Antwerp; nevertheless he settled in Italy in 1786, and in 1789 he first visited Tivoli. Denis mainly painted landscapes in a romantic style, with great attention to naturalistic details and often with dramatic light effects. Whilst in Italy, he also executed cityscapes of ancient Rome, Tivoli and later Naples often from a higher point of view. He was court painter to Joseph Bonaparte, King of Naples, from 1806 until his death in 1813.
