Note:
The Belgian painter Emile Hoeterickx was trained at the Brussels Academy. His oeuvre includes marine scenes, landscapes, cityscapes, genre scenes, and combinations thereof. Depicted here is the Willebroek Canal, which formerly ran along the garden and the Laken Castle (Brussels) and the 'Drie Fonteinen' estate, a castle, park, and village that today is located in Vilvoorde. Apparently, there was a lot of pleasure boating on this water, as it was a popular outing for the residents of Brussels in the 19th century.
