Dommersen was born Cornelis Christiaan Dommelhuizen, the illegitimate son of Cornelia Dommelhuizen and for this reason he soon changed his surname. Dommersen often signed his works with another signature, namely CC Dommershuizen, Chr. Dommelshuizen, Christian Dommelshuizen and C. Dommersen. The artist specialized in seascapes during the resurgance of marine painting in the nineteenth century and is therefore seen as a master of marine painting.
