NB:
Hendrik van Stralen was a royalist statesman in the second half of the eighteenth century. Van Stralen started his career as Alderman and Mayor of Enkhuizen. In 1805 he was appointed Secretary of State of the Ministry of Interior. In 1813 he was appointed Commissioner General of the Ministry of Interior. He married Clasina Rijgerbos in 1776. The pastels were made circa 1799/1800, when Van Stralen was aged 48 and his wife had already died. Hodges painted her portrait after an older original made at the time of her marriage.
