Most probably, the Dutch encampment during the Siege of Breda in 1637 is depicted here. This subject was painted earlier by Van Calreat on Equestrian portrait of Prince Frederik Hendrik van Oranje-Nassau with the siege of Breda in 1637 in the background, which can be found in the collection of National Museum Paleis 't Loo in Apeldoorn (inv.no. 229). Regarding the age of the artist, these works were possibly painted as a remembrance of the Eighty-Years War.
