We hereby present you our upcoming auction from Old Masters to Modernists, consisting of 184 lots. The catalog starts with five lots by Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn, lot 1 of which immediately catches the eye. This important self-portrait from 1653, Self Portrait in a Cap and Scarf with the Face Dark: Bust, is one of the best-known works of this vain and so sought after artist. Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000.
Another important graphic artist is Joan Blaeu, who is represented by lot 6 with his Theatrum urbium Belgicae foederatae from 1649. This special second Latin edition of the first volume of Blaeu's City Atlas of the Netherlands is in museum condition with its hand-coloured and gilt accents. Valuation € 40,000 – 60,000.
Among the many Old Master paintings you will find a very important art historical piece under lot 19. This painting by Jacob Ochtervelt not only depicts an attractive elegant company, but is most likely the game's first known Western depiction Paper, Rock, Scissors. Despite the fact that this originally Chinese interaction has been described since 206 BC, it would not have reached the West until the 20th century. Through this work we now know that this board game has been around for three and a half centuries brightens up our evenings. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.
Among the still lifes on offer you will also find a work of highly refined quality, signed W. Mertens - the artist known as Wouter Mertens. This Garland of Fruit, more than a meter wide, managed to reach us from a private collection in Milan. Estimate € 15,000 – 25,000.
This auction also contains a wide range of Romantic paintings by well-known artists such as Spohler, Roosenboom, Schelfhout, Eversen and the famous Koekkoek dynasty of painters. Additionally Cornelis Springer is represented with lot 68, Behind the Walls in Harderwijk; an important work in his oeuvre, mentioned in literature and provided with a declaration of authenticity by the artist himself. Estimate € 15,000 – 20,000.
A selection of works of later date is by Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek, originating from various private collectors. Five of the six are dedicated to his own hometown of Rotterdam, though all are characterised by the impressive skyscapes. Estimates ranging from € 800 – 12,000.
The Laren School is well represented by the many interiors, including one by Jozef Israëls. This Jour de Repos: The Card Players is a refined watercolour version of the well-known large-format painting De Kaartspelers. Estimate € 4,000 – 6,000.
In addition, a collection of works by Willem de Famars Testas has been included which was passed on through private property. Like his contemporary Marius Bauer (lot 161), this passionate artist visited the Orient early on, but after his return he also devoted himself to the illustration of books. Estimates ranging from € 600 – 1,200.
Lot 179, My Wife Marie, by Evert Pieters immediately catches the eye among the Impressionist works. The loose touch and colour shades with which this double-sided work is composed equals the quality of Pieters’ well-known contemporary international colleagues. Estimate € 3,000 – 5,000.
The auction will be concluded with two important paintings by the Amsterdam artist Kees Maks. Lot 183, The Dressage Rider, shows the agile smooth touch in its mainly yellow-orange dominated palette. Estimate € 4,000 – 6,000. The consecutive - and final - lot 184 depicts the portrait of the famous actress Jo Bouwmeester. With its exceptional provenance and the actresses’ cheeky look, this is an absolute eye-catcher for your interior. Estimate € 10,000 – 20,000.
