509 - Old Masters to Modernists

15 June 2019

We are proud to present to you the catalog of the upcoming auction with 163 lots from the hand of Old Masters to works by early 20th century modernists.

You will find the painting among the oldest works The adoration of the Magi, painted by a follower of Pieter Coecke van Aelst I and dating from the 16th or 17th century. This Flemish primitive shows the rich silk robes of the various figures and the gilded holders and armor of the kings in great detail and is presented to you with a beautiful frame. Valuation for lot 3 € 8,000 – 12,000.
One of the many portraits in this catalog is lot 8 by Victor Boucquet. The gentleman depicted was clearly very wealthy, as his gloves, often made of the finest calf leather, cost more than a year's salary at the time. Valuation € 5,000 – 10,000.
This year is the Rembrandt year and that is celebrated with four lots in this auction. In addition to an original etching and a later copy of a self-portrait, we would like to point out lot 17 to you Self portrait with a gorget and a beret may have been made by an artist from Rembrandt's very close environment. It also has an impressive provenance, as it was exhibited and published several times in the past as by Rembrandt himself. Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000.

The romantic school is well represented by several important masters, including Cornelis Springer with lot 24. De Capriccio of a Dutch town of his hand was not known before, because it had been in the family of Baroness Van Lynden and Van Pallandt for a long time. This is offered to you with a valuation of € 10,000 – 15,000.
Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg is represented with a beautiful Amsterdam cityscape, The Amsterdam canals at sundown, the Lutheran Church beyond, where this master of light shows its strength in a small format. Valuation for lot 26 € 4,000 – 6,000.
Lot 48, by the horse painter Wouterus Verschuur, is also of high quality, depicting a boy in the stable with his horses and dog friend. This painting has an estimated value of € 5,500 – 7,500. Also included are works by other important animal painters, such as Cornelis Raaphorst, Otto Eerelman and Henriëtte Ronner-Knip.
Lot 56 of the latter is offered, including her oil painting Mother watching her four playful kittens is complemented by the same representation executed in black chalk and charcoal. Valuation for this special combination of two works € 4,000 – 6,000.

The industrial life of the late 19th and early 20th century is depicted in lot 97 by Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek, among others. This face on The Maas at the Willemskade shows the factories and port of Rotterdam in all its glory and has a valuation of € 3,000 – 5,000.
A few kilometers to the north, Floris Arntzenius aptly captured the rapidly changing streets of The Hague in the Industrial Age with his quick impressionistic touch. No fewer than four typical Hague works by him are included, lots 128-131.

The highlight of this auction is lot 104, by the most famous Amsterdam painter George Hendrik Breitner. This extremely elegant representation of two ladies walking across the Corner Reguliersgracht-Keizersgracht, Amsterdam, was painted around 1895 from photographs taken by the artist himself. Breitner also used this photo for a comparable painting, which brought in the world record price of € 760,250. This work is offered to you with a wagering price of only €80,000 – 120,000.

Veilinghuis AAG was one of the first auction houses to sell paintings by Europeans working in Indonesia and is still doing so with great success. In this auction we have once again included a section on this special collector's subject.
Notable are the 4 lots by Willem Dooijewaard, in which his Japanese period - seen by many as his peak - is also highlighted. This is confirmed by lot 124, a rare oil painting depicting one Geisha walking in a park. Valuation € 5,000 – 10,000.
President Sukarno's 'court painter' Lee Man Fong is also represented in the auction, with lot 127. This rare Chinese work, depicting Quanzhou Western and Eastern Pagodas, he made in 1956 while traveling through South China. Valuation €10,000 – 20,000.

Towards the end of the auction you will find a number of lots by experimental modernists such as Leo Gestel, Dirk Filarski, Kees Maks, Hippolyte Petitjean, Jean Dufy and Jan Sluijters.
Van Sluijters even included four works, of which Young boy in high chair (lot 138), Balcony in winter (lot 139) and Portrait of an elegant lady with her dog (lot 140) on paper. Lot 137 is an oil painting by his hand and turned out to be a true 'barn-find'. This one Seated nude comes from a private collection and has been family owned for three generations. The woman depicted is probably Greet Sluijters-Van Cooten (1885-1967), the artist's second wife and his favorite model. Valuation for this masterpiece € 20,000 – 30,000.

We close the auction with two very modernist but different paintings. The first is by Jan Mankes and entitled Landscape book, a museum work from 1912. Valuation for lot 162 € 15,000 – 25,000.
The last lot 163 is by Johan van Hell, representing one String quartet, is made by the painter and musician armed with brush and clarinet. Van Hell played in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra for many years, but refused a permanent appointment because he wanted to continue his passion for making art. This special painting is offered to you with a valuation of € 15,000 – 20,000.
