501 - Post-War & Contemporary Art

3 June 2018

We are opening the season with this new auction of post-war and contemporary art. This catalog contains 258 works from various European collections, making it a very international auction, partly due to some spectacular masterpieces.

The catalog will also pay attention to the Cobra movement, which was founded 70 years ago by the young progressive group of artists. A good example concerns lot 6 by Kapel Appel, titled La famille. This work in gouache and chalk on paper dates from 1950 and was acquired shortly afterwards by the grandfather of the current owner. This special drawing is offered to you with a valuation of € 8,000 – 12,000.
By Corneille we offer you two important works on paper from 1948. Both were purchased directly from the artist and have a museum history. Valuation € 5,000 – 8,000 each.
Besides works by other CoBrA members such as Constant, Theo Wolvecamp, Jan Cobbaert and Lucebert, you will find an impressive piece by Pierre Alechinsky. This lot 13, titled Arbre Foudroyé, is a large format artwork in ink on paper on canvas, a technique typical of his works from the early 1970s. Valuation € 30,000 – 50,000.

The large number of Zero works is impressive. This section will start with two works by Ad Dekkers, who gave an exceptional impulse to geometric-abstract art in the Netherlands. This wall sculpture, Square and circle in transition, is a wonderful example of his so-called boundary reliefs. Lot 19 from 1970 is offered to you with the attractive valuation of € 10,000 – 15,000.
After works by Nul artists Jan Schoonhoven and Armando, the international Zero works are discussed, the first two of which are by Lucio Fontana. Lot 25 concerns the sought-after lacquered copper sculpture Concetto Spaziale, Pillola from 1967. This sculpture was produced in different colors and designs, but this is the very rare version. Valuation € 55,000 – 75,000.
The work of art by Piero Manzoni that is offered under lot 27 is exceptional. This original Achrome was made in 1960 with the characteristic technique of kaolin and glue on wood. We are proud to offer you this masterpiece with a valuation of € 80,000 – 120,000.
Other well-known names in this section are Dadamaino, Alberto Biasi, Toni Costa, Bernard Aubertin and Turi Simeti. Lot 31 of the latter is the cover lot. In this Segno Giallo from 1971, a half, elliptical rim has been incorporated, which captivates the viewer's eye. Valuation € 35,000 – 45,000.

The international and contemporary aspect of this auction is striking. A good example of this are the four lots by Iran Do Espirito Santo, where lot 42 is a mirror installation from 2010. This work was purchased by the current owner that same year from a prestigious gallery in New York. You can now obtain this with a valuation of € 10,000 – 20,000.
Another impressive example concerns lot 212 by Olivier Mosset, titled Pool. This work in acrylic on canvas was made in 1988 and measures over two by two metres. The fact that Mosset was one of the founders of the minimalist artists' collective BMPT is clearly visible in the depiction of concrete simplicity in this painting. Valuation € 30,000 – 50,000.

This auction also contains a very extensive section of photographic works. Because the makers vary from Malick Sidibé to David LaChapelle, a good overview is sketched of the international photography history. No fewer than four works by the latter are offered, of which Amanda Lepore: Addicted to Diamonds, New York is one of his most iconic photos. This muse of the artist and renowned transgender model is offered to you under lot 136 in large format, edition 3 and valued at € 15,000 – 25,000.
From Dutch soil we offer you, among other things, lot 167 by Rineke Dijkstra, one of the works from the company collection HEMA / Koninklijke Bijenkorf Beheer (KBB). Buzz (Club), Liverpool, England is part of the acclaimed video work 'The Buzz Club' that exposes the disarming vulnerability of young adolescents at a house party. The proceeds from this characteristic lot for Dijkstra's oeuvre, as well as a number of other lots, will benefit the HEMA Foundation. Valuation € 6,000 – 10,000.

Various Asian works are also included, of which lot 229 by Jung Wha Cho immediately catches the eye. This painted fiberglass sculpture, titled jump, shows an attractive half-dressed woman in the distorted perspective so characteristic of this artist. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.

Among the Dutch artists you will find works by Eugène Brands, Reinier Lucassen, Rob Scholte, Emo Verkerk, Ger van Elk, Berend Strik, Toon Verhoef and Rob van Koningsbruggen.

The auction will conclude with a special drawing in Chinese ink on paper by Australian artist Vali Myers. This drawing from 1975 is titled Becchina and shows the animals she loves so much. Since works by her hand are rarely available, this lot 258 has a very inviting valuation of € 2,000 – 4,000.

Of course, the above is just a selection from the entire range. We therefore invite you to the online catalog here .

We hope to welcome you in our saleroom soon!
