490 - Modern & Contemporary Art

11 June 2017

Characteristic of this auction is the diverse and international character of the lots on offer. Not only well-known Dutch artists are discussed, but the catalog also gives a good impression of the diversity of the general art movements of the past hundred years.

The auction starts with a selection of classic works of art, of which the three works by Hans Bayens are extremely decorative. In particular lot 11, Circus horses with their dresser, shows the artist's skill with a very fleeting brushstroke and lets you imagine yourself in the circus stables. Valuation € 1,500 – 2,500.

Next to Kees van Dongen, various foreign artists are represented, including Henri Matisse, Emil Nolde, and Yves Tanguy. The latter has applied his recognizable technique of Indian ink diluted with water in lot 16. This work, belonging to the sought-after period of his oeuvre from the 1920s, has an attractive valuation of €8,000 – 12,000.
Another famous Frenchman is featured with lot 19, a typical work by André Derain. who died as a result of a car accident. The former owner bought Dame aux Chiens  to Kunsthandel EJ van Wisselingh & Co, this is now offered to you with a valuation of € 4,000 – 6,000.

Among the Dutch artists you will find a very exceptional piece by Dirk Smorenberg. Not only are the water lilies depicted by him very striking, but they also have a frame carved by the artist. It is known that Smorenberg only made these Art Deco frames for his best works, so lot 22 sketches a wonderful example of his oeuvre. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.

Among the various 'nudes' included in the catalogue, lot 37 by the Belgian George Morren immediately catches the eye. Despite the fact that the Lily does not belong to his youngest portrayed, the artist's love for this model is clearly visible. Valuation for this work included in the literature € 3,000 – 5,000.

Of a more modern touch is the minimalist selection, included in this catalog. In addition to works by Jan Schoonhoven and Laurens van Kuijk, among others, you will find Ad Dekkers through the relief in polyester. This one Shifted squares from 1965 therefore belong to the epitome of the Dutch Zero movement. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.
Then some pop art artists are discussed, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Tom Wesselmann. The latter is an internationally sought-after piece, if only because this ink drawing served as a study for the well-known etching and aquatint Monica Nude with Matisse from 1990. Valuation € 5,000 – 8,000.

The cover of the catalog, lot 74, is decorated by the second lot by Walasse Ting, depicting Three beauties. He made this large and iconic work in acrylic and ink on paper and is offered to you with a target price of € 20,000 – 30,000.

Among the CoBrA artists you will not only find works by Corneille, Lucebert, Rooskens and Recontent d'Haese, but also three paintings by Theo Wolvecamp. These museum pieces all come from the painter's estate and show Wolvecamp's powerful brushstroke. Valuations lot 80 to 82 of € 4,000 – 10,000.

No fewer than five works by Jaap Hillenius are included in this auction, all from his family estate. The fact that this artist is known for his play of light and color is proven by the paintings offered here of various dates and sizes. Valuation of lot 97 to 101 ranging from € 800 – 5,000.

Also included is a collection of contemporary works from a former collector and supporter of the 'new arts'. In addition to various international names, this collection contains paintings by Jus Juchtmans and Willy de Sauter. The former has since gained fame in the gallery world with his paintings in acrylic, strongly accentuated with final varnish, which have an almost dreamy appearance. Valuations differ from € 900 – 2,500.

The painting by Michel van Ofen comes from the company collection Bierbrouwerij Oranjeboom. This idyllic landscape is definitely among his best works and is offered to you with the tempting target price of € 6,000 – 10,000.

Of course, the above is just a selection from the entire range. We therefore invite you to the online catalog here .
