476 - Modern & Contemporary Art

5 June 2016

We hereby present you the catalog of our upcoming auction on Monday 6 June, which includes various private collections. This auction contains a collection of works by Dirk Filarski, but also by more contemporary artists such as Walasse Ting, Eugène Brands, Jef Diederen, Ger Lataster and sculptor Carolein Smit.

Among the early modern artists you will find lot 12, St. Tropez by Jan Sluijters. This beautifully detailed watercolor, which bears strong resemblance to works by Van Dongen, invites you to participate in fashionable coastal life. Valuation € 5,000 – 8,000.
Lot 15 dates from the same period, winter sun by Johan Dijkstra, who depicts the typical Dutch water. Dijkstra was an avid sailor and his dinghy 'Fenris' on the Paterwoldsemeer was one of his most beloved subjects. The valuation for this painting from 1945 is € 10,000 – 15,000.

This catalog contains various works by Russian artists including Konstantin Matveevich Lomykin, Nikola Tanev and Oskar Yakovlevich Rabin. The painting by the latter, depicting Flowers in the city was obtained directly from the artist by family of the current owner. This lot 22 was most likely part of the 'Bulldozer Exhibition' outside Moscow in 1974. This unofficial and therefore banned exhibition was organized by the Moscow avant-garde artists, with Rabin as initiator. The exhibition was brutally demolished by the police, using bulldozers and water cannons, resulting in the loss of much of this artist's work. This important work is presented to you with a valuation of € 6,000 – 10,000.

Various prominent CoBrA artists are also represented in this auction, including Corneille, Lucebert, Anton Rooskens and Theo Wolvecamp. Lot 27 by Rooskens belonged to the collection of the early CoBrA collector Steef de Vries, a passionate collector who was also one of the driving forces behind the Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam. De Vries was particularly interested in abstract and experimental art in the Netherlands and was one of the founders and board members of the Association for Irrealism and Abstraction in the Visual Arts. This gouache and collage on paper from 1951 is valued at € 7,000 – 9,000.

The cover is adorned with the challenging work by Willem Hussem from 1962. The brightly colored oil paint, applied pasty on the jute that is so typical for him, makes this one of the best works of his oeuvre. This lot 43, once purchased at Galerie Nouvelles Images in The Hague, has a valuation of € 4,000 – 6,000.

In addition to the striking material painting by Jan Cremer from 1960, you will find an even earlier copy by Bram Bogart, entitled Brun-Gris. This museum work from 1953 has a size of 188 cm high and has graced the walls of the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen. Valuation for this lot 49 € 8,000 – 12,000.

This catalog contains an extensive section of photographic works by, among others, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Nan Goldin, William Klein, Bert Stern and Antanas Sutkus. But Dutch pride Marc Mulders, Gerard Fieret and Aernout Overbeeke are also represented. By the hand of Hendrik Kerstens you will find no fewer than two lots, lot 79 of which belongs to an internationally highly sought-after series. The pictured here hairnet from 2000 concerns the forerunner of the iconic work bag. This monumental photo is presented to you with a valuation of € 4,000 – 6,000.

This auction contains several lots from the distinguished GE Artesia collection, including the largest work in this auction. Lot 101 by Toon Verhoef has a size of 291 x 401 cm and is without doubt one of his most impressive works. The combination of oil paint, acrylic and the fiberglass film, which is so typical for him, takes the viewer along in the accurately balanced interplay of lines. Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000.

Among the sculptures you will not only find a collection by Carolein Smit, but also works by Kees Verkade, Peer Veneman, Eric Claus and Frank Letterie. The auction will be closed with lot 131 by Chris Tap. This life size Lion shows the artist's skill in making true-to-life copies that are barely distinguishable from the real thing. This powerful, yet graceful bronze has an extremely attractive valuation of €15,000 – 25,000.

Of course, the above is just a selection from the entire range. We therefore invite you to the online catalog here .
