467 - 19th Century Paintings & a collection of works by Old Masters

15 November 2015

We are proud to present you the catalog of our upcoming auction containing 111 lots, ranging from 17th century masters to early 20th century founders.

The auction will start with a beautiful work in oil on panel by the small but renowned master Jan van Leyden. This work, depicting Dutch ships off Dordrecht with fishermen pulling in a net in the foreground on the right, has been family owned since 1973 and comes with the original purchase invoice from Kunsthandel A. van der Meer in Amsterdam. This well-known work is now offered to you with a valuation of € 1,000 – 2,000.
Seascape collectors will also be enthusiastic about lot 3, by Nicolaas Baur. This one Two-master on a raging sea, dated 1805, confirms the skill of this acclaimed artist. Valuation € 4,000 – 6,000.
The last seascape, lot 10, is the second recorded work by George Willem Opdenhoff. This extremely soothing oil on panel painting is one of his best works and is valued at €3,000 – 5,000.

Among the cityscapes you will find no fewer than two works by Cornelis Springer. Lot 19 depicts The Waag on the Brink in Deventer from 1888. This very precise watercolor on paper has its provenance that goes back to the auction at Frederik Muller in Amsterdam on December 1, 1891. This large-format work, measuring 59.4 x 48.4 cm, is therefore repeatedly mentioned in the literature and will be included in the oeuvre catalogue. Valuation € 20,000 – 30,000.
But also lot 21, Throwing snowballs in the Korte Begijnestraat in Haarlem, belongs to one of the trouvailles in this auction. Petrus Gerardus Vertin not only shows his characteristic touch of light and dark shades, but has also developed them very attractively through the bustle in the street with mischievous boys in the foreground. Valuation € 3,000 – 5,000.

Various landscapes are offered in this auction, including Shepherds with resting cattle in a river landscape by Jacob van Strij. This lot 33 shows the characteristic warm use of color of this painter who was already known during his life as the romantic realist. Valuation for this oil painting € 4,000 – 6,000.
Five works by Albertus Verhoesen are offered, collected together by a Dutch collector. The last work by Verhoesen in this auction concerns lot 38, depicting the Hoenderhof and dates from 1861. This one also shows Verhoesen's passion for poultry and the inspiration he gained from works by Melchior d'Hondecoeter. Valuation € 3,500 – 5,500.

Henriette Ronner-Knip is represented by five works, which clearly confirm the versatility of this artist. Most of the animals in her works were always physically present in her studio, often playing in a glass display case. Lot 45, on the other hand, shows two cats in watercolor that Play hide and seek in her room, which, despite their freedom, are so strikingly captured that these cats almost seem to pose. Valuation € 10,000 – 15,000.

For lovers of still lifes we offer two impressive works. The first, Fruit still life with grapes, peaches and red berries was made by the prominent master painter Adriana Haanen. Her work was already included in large collections during her lifetime, such as that of King Willem II and the collection of the Dutch Empire. Today, the paintings by Haanen can be found in the Amsterdam Historical Museum, the Willet-Holthuysen Museum, the Rijksmuseum and the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage. This lot 48 belongs to her museum works and is offered to you with a valuation of € 12,000 – 15,000.
The other work that we would like to emphasize concerns lot 49 by Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen, depicting Flower still life with roses. This lifelike watercolor, dated 1879, is one of the finest works by this progressive female artist. Valuation € 15,000 – 18,000.

The Dutch light, the spectacular coastline, the craggy beach and the people who enjoy themselves there were no small attraction for the painters of the 19th century. Beach life is therefore a popular theme in painting during this period. For example, the beach located behind the Badhotel in Domburg was the location where Willem Vaarzon Morel stayed to record the bathers. lot 70, Elegant lady on the beach of Domburg, has the attractive valuation of € 5,000 – 7,000.
Belonging to the younger generation of beach painters is Louis Soonius, very popular for his sunny, colorful beach views in The Hague and Scheveningen. Lot 71 shows the Kurhaus in the background and the summer beach entertainment there. Valuation € 12,000 – 15,000.
A popular form of entertainment was the 'donkey ride' for the children, which was recorded by Willem Maris in lot 72. For a few cents children could rent a donkey to ride around the beach, as this cover lot from 1867 shows. Coming from a private collection in Canada, this painting is being auctioned at a valuation of €20,000 – 30,000.

Lot 73, the extremely colorful watercolor by Isaac Iraels, you may recognize from the previous successful sale in 2012. The well-depicted activity on The vegetable market, makes this a very attractively priced lot with a valuation of € 10,000 – 15,000.
The subsequent lot was probably painted by Israels during his stay in the Zuidwal hospital in The Hague in 1919. The pictured here Nurse could possibly concern the charming Letty Gestman, for whom the artist developed a certain passion. Valuation € 10,000 – 15,000.

This auction will be concluded with the impressive painting by Johan Hendrik van Mastenbroek, entitled Broek in Waterland during the flood in 1916. After this flood, Van Mastenbroek devoted himself to the victims by publishing and selling picture postcards. But he also sold the work offered here in 1918 for fl. 20,000 for the benefit of those affected by the flood. This large-format painting, measuring over 70 x 130 cm, was therefore the eye-catcher of the retrospective exhibition in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam in 2005. Valuation for lot 111 is € 15,000 – 25,000.

Of course, the above is just a selection from the entire range. We therefore invite you to the online catalog here .
